I’m pretty sure none of this would have happened if I hadn’t been fired from Apple. It was awful tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it. Sometimes life hit you in the head with a brick. Don’t lose faith. I’m convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You’ve got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don’t settle.

私がApple（アップル）をクビになっていなかったら、このどれもは、起きていなかったということが、極めて確かなのです。それは、酷く苦い薬でしたが、患者である私には必要なことだったと思います。時には、人生はあなたの頭をブロックで殴ることもあります。決して、信念を失わないで下さい。私は、本当に好きな物事しか続けられないと確信している。何が好きなのかを探しなさい。あなたの仕事も、恋人も同じです。あなたの仕事は、あなたの人生の大部分を占めるでしょう。やりがいを感じることができるただ一つの方法は、素晴らしい仕事だと心底思えることをやることです。そして、偉大な仕事をやり抜くただ一つの道は、仕事を愛することです。もし、好きなことをまだ見つけられていないなら、探し続けてください。決して立ち止まってはいけません。あらゆる心の問題と同じように、本当にやりたいことが見つかった時は、すぐに分かります。そして、素晴らしい恋愛と同じように、時間が立つごとに良くなっていくものです。だから、好きなものを見つけるまで探し続けて下さい。止まらないことです。

My third story is about death.

3番目の話は、死についてです。

When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: “If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you’ll most certainly be right.” It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?” And whenever the answer has been “No” for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.

私は17歳の時、「毎日を人生最後の日だと思って生きれば、いつか必ずその日は来るだろう」という言葉をどこかで、書いてあるのを読みました。それは、とても私の印象に残り、それ以来33年間、私は毎朝鏡映る自分に問いかけるようにしているのです。「今日が人生最後の日だったとしたら、今日やる予定だったことをやりたいと願うだろうか。」そして、「No（違う）」という答えが何日も続くようなら、何かを変える必要があります。

Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything — all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure — these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.

自分は間も無く死ぬという認識が、私が人生において重大な選択をする時、一番役に立つのです。なぜなら、永遠の希望やプライド、恥を書くこと、失敗への恐れなどそれらの全て、死の前には、何の意味もなくなり、本当に重要なことだけが残るからです。自分もいつかは死ぬ。それを思い出すことは、失うものなど何もないということを気づかせてくれる最善の方法です。我々は、最初から裸です。自分自身の心に従わない理由はないです。
